Choosing A Kitchen Remodeling Contractor In New York

If there’s one home improvement project you’ll never regret investing into, it is kitchen remodeling. And rightly so, as it’s not just about aesthetics but also efficiency and long-term value addition.

But this is also one project that calls for hands-on professional expertise. So much so that one wrong step and you could end up with losses worth thousands of dollars.

So, how to choose a kitchen remodeling contractor who is seasoned and knows how to do things right the first time?

This is one question I am often asked by New Yorkers, and I am sure you’re curious to know about it too.

Now, having worked with homeowners across all stages of kitchen renovations, I know what it takes to hire the right kitchen remodel general contractor

Read on, as I’ve detailed how you can choose a kitchen remodeler who ensures quality craftsmanship and stays well within your budget.

Why do you need a contractor for kitchen remodel in the first place?

Before I get into the specifics of how you can hire the right kitchen remodel contractor, let me answer a broader question I am asked as a general construction contractor

You see, there’s a common query people from across New York ask, i.e., do I need a contractor for kitchen remodel, or can I DIY?

Now, although you can DIY your kitchen remodel and save anywhere between 20 to 35 percent of your total project cost, I strongly suggest against doing so.

Why?

Well, a reputed contractor will ensure your kitchen remodel is completed on time, within your budget, and to your satisfaction.

Not to mention, such a professional can also provide advice on design and material choices and make sure you’re compliant with local building codes and regulations.

At the end of the day, you’ll avoid common remodeling pitfalls and experience high-quality workmanship.

How to choose a kitchen remodeling contractor: An 8-step guide

steps on how to choose a kitchen remodeling contractor

Now that you know why it is super important to hire a contractor, let me address the bigger deal, i.e., how to hire a contractor for kitchen remodel.

For starters, choosing the right kitchen remodeling contractor isn’t as simple as it seems. After all, from contractor’s expertise to licensing to local reputation, and more, there are plenty of things you’ll have to take into account.

Also, it goes without saying that you’ve to also finalize your remodeling type and budget. That’s because the contractor you hire will also depend on these factors.

So, to make things straightforward for you, I’ve broken down the entire process into 8 simple steps. And that includes:

Step 1. Decide on your remodeling type and budget

Even before you start looking out for the ideal kitchen remodeler, it’s essential you clearly outline two things:

A. What your project is going to involve.

B. How much you’re willing to invest.

For instance, whether it is going to be minor upgrades only or a full-scale overhaul is something you’ll have to decide. Also, you’ll figure out if there are any specific materials or appliances you want in your kitchen.

Most importantly, you should have a clear estimate of how much you want to invest in this remodeling project.

You see, it is based on these twin factors that prospective contractors can provide you with accurate estimates. So, having a clear answer to these is key.

Step 2. Do your research (both offline and online)

The more you research local contractors, the better professionals you’ll end up working with.

And to that end, I suggest you start taking contractor feedback from friends, family, or neighbors who’ve undertaken similar projects recently. That’s because you can’t get more valuable insights than those from firsthand experiences.

Thereater, you can look at online ratings, reviews, and feedback on platforms like Google and Yelp. Also, home improvement threads on Reddit and Quora are excellent resources for unbiased reviews.

Overall, my advice is that you look for contractors with consistent positive feedback and examples of their previous work.

Step 3. Make sure the contractors are licensed and credentialed

It is necessary that a contractor is licensed in order for them to work on your kitchen remodeling project legally. In fact, license apart, they should also carry valid insurance plus other certifications.

So, here are a couple of things I suggest you definitely check:

    A. Whether or not they are licensed in the State of New York (or any other state where you’re looking to have a kitchen remodel).

    B. Whether or not they carry a general liability insurance that includes workers’ compensation.

Apart from these, you should also look for additional credentials like membership in organizations like the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) or the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA). These memberships add additional credibility as only renowned professionals are a part of them.

      Step 4. Interview multiple contractors

As a general rule of thumb for how to choose a kitchen remodeling contractor, you should never settle on the first contractor you meet.

Rather, take my advice and schedule interviews with at least three prospective contractors. Heren, you’ll compare their approach, communication style, and cost estimates, to name a few.

Here are a few important questions to ask the contractors while interviewing them:

      • How many kitchen remodels have you completed in the past?
      • Can you provide an average timeline for how long it will take to remodel my kitchen?
      • What’s your process for handling unexpected challenges that might arise?
      • Will you manage the building department permits (if needed) or that is my responsibility?

The answers to these questions will give you a clear idea about the contractors’ experience and how helpful they’re going to be throughout the renovation process.

Step 5. Look at past work and references

When it comes to hiring a professional for kitchen remodel, having a solid portfolio of their past projects is important. That’s because it will give you a sneak peak into their workmanship and attention to detail.

So, do ask potential contractors for a portfolio of their previous projects, along with a before and after video of the worksites if possible.

At the same time, don’t hesitate to ask for references and reach out to previous clients to inquire about their experiences.

You can ask past clients questions like:

      • Was the project completed on time and within budget?
      • Were they responsive to questions and concerns?
      • Did they cover the building department permit for kitchen remodel?
      • Were there any unexpected issues and how were they handled?

Step 6. Get precise and written quotes

A contractor with high professional standards should provide you with a precise kitchen remodeling cost estimate. Moreover, they should also be able to break down their estimate for the following:

      A. Labor costs

      B. Material costs

      C. Permit fees

Now, at this point I suggest you ask the contractor to provide everything in writing as this will help you avoid misunderstandings later on.

Pro tip: If you are getting a quote that is significantly lower than others, you have reasons to be wary. That’s because this is a sign the contractor could use subpar materials or even cut corners.

Step 7. Thoroughly analyze the contract

Before you sign anything, I suggest you review the contract in great detail. You should particularly look for the following:

        • A clear payment schedule.
        • A clear scope of work.
        • A termination clause.
        • A warranty on workmanship and materials.

Step 8. See if the contractor listens and communicates clearly

You’ll agree when I say that the contractor is your only point of contact throughout the remodel. So, I can’t overstate the importance of hiring someone who not only listens to your concerns but also communicates clearly.

In fact, If you sense dismissiveness or a lack of transparency, trust your instincts and move on.

5 Red flags to watch out for when hiring a kitchen remodeling contractor

With a clear understanding of how to choose a kitchen remodeling contractor who is right for your project, you might well be considering a few professionals already.

But I suggest you take it easy and know about a few potential red flags before finalizing a contractor. After all, it is not just about the cost of professional labor but also your entire upfront investment on kitchen remodel.

All in all, here are a few red flags in remodeling contractors that you should not ignore:

Red Flag 1. They lack proper licensing and insurance

As I mentioned above, a proper state-specific license is key before you finalize a contractor.

This is very straightforward: If you want a kitchen remodel in New York, the contractor shouldn’t be one with a State of New Jersey license. Similarly, they should also have general liability insurance.

Now, a reputable contractor should willingly provide proof of licensing and insurance. And if they hesitate, it’s a major warning sign.

Red Flag 2. They offer unrealistically low bids

You want to save money on your remodeling project, and there’s nothing wrong with it.

But, if a contractor offers you extremely low bids, it could mean they are inexperienced and they might be using subpar materials.

Red flag 3. They demand large upfront payments

A reputable contractor will never ask for an upfront deposit of more than 10-20 percent. Also, their contract will include reasonable structured payments throughout the project.

Meaning if a contractor asks for either full payment upfront or an upward of 30 percent as deposit, you should probably avoid them.

Red flag 4. They don’t have any portfolio or references

If a contractor cannot showcase their previous work or provide references, you should not hire them.

Red flag 5. They are unprofessional

When hiring a contractor, I suggest you pay attention to their punctuality, demeanor, and respect for your space during the initial meeting itself.

You see, a lack of professionalism early on can only worsen during the project. So, I suggest you stick to contractors who exhibit a professional behavior.

        Frequently asked questions

        Yes, absolutely!

However, make sure the contractor has specialises in kitchen cabinetry, countertops, and appliances.

Also, you’ll still have to hire and coordinate with subcontractors. Not to mention the hassle of ordering materials and securing permits.

As such, I suggest a project like this is best left to professionals.

How to handle disputes with your contractor?
